Earlier this week, Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre took a dig at Toronto's 2am last call as he introduced a pilot project to extend his city's drinking hours to 5:30am. As Coderre said, "There is a nightlife in Montreal. The only reason there is one in Toronto is because there's a half a million Montrealers who have moved there." Weekends on June 12th to July 5th, the bars on a stretch of two Montreal streets (Crescent and Saint-Denis Streets) will be allowed to serve until dawn. As the CBC reported, "Coderre said the city will evaluate the economic and social impact of the extended hours before deciding whether to make the change permanent." Meanwhile, Ontario has started a widely-criticized plan to sell alcohol in stores and VQA wines will soon be sold at farmer's markets.
